My name is Katie Caraway and I am a Title I Reading teacher at FIS.  I am the lead teacher in the 3rd and 4th grade Reading Room.  I graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2005 with a degree in Elementary Education.  I have my Reading Teacher certificate and my Masters in Reading and Language Studies from SIU.  I was a Title I Reading Aide for two years at Denning.  In 2007 I was hired as a 5th grade teacher at FIS.  I taught 5th grade for two years before moving to STL.  I moved back in 2011 and was hired as a Title I Reading Aide in the FIS Reading Room.  I loved every minute of it and knew this was the place for me.  I feel so blessed to be able to work with every 3rd and 4th grade student.  I look forward each year to help my students develop a love for reading.

Every 3rd and 4th grade class comes into my room for 30 minutes.  We teach using differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students.  The students work in small ability groups no larger than seven students per group.  They enjoy reading leveled readers each week and learning through hands on activities to keep them engaged during their reading time.

We focus on the 5 components of reading:
                                                    Phonics
                                                    Phonemic Awareness
                                                    Vocabulary
                                                    Fluency
                                                    Comprehension

The more that you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.
